It sends shivers down the spine to think about child sexual abuse. It's hard to think about, and even more difficult to imagine discussing the subject with your child. But research on abuse prevention shows that it's essential to teach children that certain parts of their body are private. How do we talk about abuse with our children without scaring them?
My Body Belongs to Me was written to help alleviate parents' fears and concerns about how to discuss sexual abuse with their children. Jill Starishevsky, the author, and an Assistant District Attorney in New York City who has prosecuted hundreds of sex offenders, was outraged after years of hearing the stories of children who were confused and bewildered by the abuse they had experienced. A mother of two children herself, she was determined to find a new way of to help families prevent such predatory abuse and arm their children with the information they needed to protect themselves. The result is My Body Belongs to Me, a beautifully illustrated book that combines simple, rhyming words with lovely drawings to help children understand that they have the right to say no to anyone who attempts to touch them inappropriately.
